The modern car driver must now feel like they need 2 engines; one that offers low fuel consumption, environmentally friendly emissions and another that delivers the driving thrills expected of a performance car. The latest engines from Japan offer this in one technically advanced package.
Honda's exceptional VTEC engine control allows for literally two engine characteristics in one. The engine fitted to the JDM Civic Type-R gives superb fuel economy and low emissions from its first mild mannered CAM lobe up to around 5,500rpm. However when the driver wants more performance one of the world's most powerful normally aspirated engines has a complete personality change as the engine switches to its performance VTEC CAM. Induction noise hardens and the rev counter dramatically increase pace as it whips round to the 8,700rpm redline.
Subaru's inventive Si-Drive offers similar control over the engines output this time through a convenient dash button. Now the driver can select the optimum engine performance and even in 310bhp form the Impreza and Legacy engines still offer excellent economy thanks to this advanced Si-Drive control. Economy modes allow for fuel efficient motorway cruising and urban driving with the engines full performance only a simple switch away.
The latest Subaru models also benefit from our additional EuroIV emissions programs which involves detailed in-house testing that helps reduce emissions and improve fuel consumption.

On a recent trip to the Nurburgring, which regularly saw speeds into triple figures, the Honda Civic Type-R averaged a very credible 27mpg. Steady motorway cruising saw this figure in the 30's.
The Legacy Spec B with its "intelligent" mode engaged returns 28-32mpg on a Motorway cruise and combined figure of around 25mpg with city driving. The latest 2.0 litre Impreza S-GT models will return similar figures with its "ECO" mode engaged.
The sensible choice doesn't have to be dull!
