Update: Read about Iain Litchfield's test drive of the new STI at the Tokyo Launch
As the UK's leading independent Subaru specialist, Litchfield Imports was invited to sample the new Impreza STI at the world launch in Japan. Speaking from Tokyo Iain Litchfield gives his first thoughts on this exciting new model.
"It seems like we have been waiting for this model for a very long time and having been really impressed with the hot S-GT version I could not wait to see what Subaru has done with its flagship model. Information from contacts during development and though out the year had been really encouraging and only fuelled the anticipation and excitement. My expectations were surpassed!"
"The new STI perfectly represents Subaru's new drive into more mainstream models and combines advances in its legendary performance with significant improvements in both ride and comfort. This is clearly the STI grown up, more subtle, refined but losing none the key ingredients that made the STI such an Iconic performance bargain."
"The 2008 STI is really impressive in the flesh and I particularly liked the interior with its extremely comfortable Recaro seats. The whole cabin has leaped forward in terms of equipment and material quality. Simple details make a real difference to the STI interior style, from the gently lit STI emblem on the revised centre console to the soft Alcantara fabric that extends to both the door and centre armrests giving the interior that quality final touch."
"The body receives purposeful blisters to the arches that give the car an aggressive and dynamic appearance without relying on large spoilers that put some customers off. Up close there are some nice features like the well placed air vents behind the front wheels to remove engine temperate and the classy looking quad exhaust tail pipes. The car is able to make its purpose and intentions perfectly clear without having to shout about it. This understated style will surely win over Subaru enthusiasts and certainly appeal to a wider audience. So first impressions have been really positive but Subaru's and in particular the STI models are all about one thing, how does it drive...?"
